Plant Attributes
Toad lilies (Tricyrtis spp.) are native to eastern Asia and are named for their resemblance to toads. They grow to be about 2-3 feet tall and have lance-shaped leaves with small, colorful flowers that bloom in late summer to early autumn. The flowers are typically pink, purple, blue or white with speckles or spots. Toad lilies prefer partial or full shade and moist, well-drained soil.

Plant Care
Toad lilies are relatively low-maintenance plants. They require regular watering, especially during dry spells, and benefit from a layer of mulch to help retain moisture. If you live in an area with harsh winter weather, be sure to provide the plants with a protective layer of mulch in the fall. Be careful not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth and fewer blooms.

Pruning
Toad lilies don't require much pruning, but you can deadhead spent flowers to encourage the plant to produce more blooms. Cut the stem just above the first set of leaves to prevent unsightly bare stems.

Propagation
Toad lilies can be propagated through division or from seed. Divide them in the early spring, just as new growth begins to appear. Carefully dig up the entire plant and divide it into smaller sections, making sure each section has several healthy roots and shoots. Plant the sections in a new location, being sure to water them well. To grow toad lilies from seed, sow the seeds in the fall in a rich, well-draining soil. Cover the seeds with a light layer of soil, water well, and keep them in a sheltered location until they have sprouted.

Potting & Repotting
Toad lilies can be kept in pots if you don't have a suitable garden location for them.
  • Choose a pot that is at least 12 inches deep and has drainage holes.
  • Fill the pot with a rich,
  • well-draining potting mix and plant the toad lily at the same depth it was growing in its previous location.
  • Water the plant well and place it in a shaded location.
  • Repot the plant every 2-3 years, or when it outgrows its current container.

Common Pests & Plant Diseases
Toad lilies are relatively pest- and disease-resistant, but they can be susceptible to powdery mildew, which looks like a white powder on the leaves. To prevent powdery mildew, make sure the plants have adequate airflow and are not crowded with other plants. If you do notice powdery mildew, treat the plant with an appropriate fungicide.

Common Problems
One common problem that gardeners encounter with toad lilies is slug damage. Slugs can eat holes in the leaves and flowers, making them unsightly. To prevent slug damage, remove all debris around the plants where the slugs like to hide, such as fallen leaves and twigs. You can also use a slug trap or sprinkle diatomaceous earth around the base of the plant. Toad lilies are a unique and beautiful addition to any garden or landscape. With a little bit of care, they'll reward you with pretty flowers year after year. So why not add a touch of whimsy to your outdoor space with these charming plants?
